Nephrology
Nephrology is concerned with the diagnostic work-up and non-surgical treatment of both acute and chronic renal dysfunction as well as hypertensive, metabolic, infective and systemic inflammatory diseases that can lead to kidney failure. Very often several conditions co-exist that can threaten the renal function.
The primary objective is to stabilize kidney function to delay for as long as possible the point at which long-term renal replacement therapy (dialysis or a transplant) is needed. The Clinic carries out all standard dialysis and plasma exchange procedures. The stuff also gives advice and treats renal patients in other departments of the hospital, including round-the-clock treatment in the two intensive care units.
The dialysis unit is open Monday to Saturday from 0700 until 20.00. The dialysis nurses will advise the patient of his dialysis sessions and the time of day in which they will take place. Emergency dialysis treatments are performed at any time if medically indicated one of the intensive care units.
The department has a very experienced team of consultants and dialysis nursing staff is available around the clock.
Since even a slight reduction in kidney function and/or proteinuria lead to significantly increased rates of cardiovascular disease and mortality, disturbances in renal function must be recognized at an early stage and continuously receive the appropriate treatment, blood pressure and metabolic management.
Systemic inflammatory rheumatological diseases
Systemic inflammatory rheumatological diseases comprise chronic autoimmune diseases causing pain and inflammatory changes to the locomotor system and often also to the internal organs (such as the kidneys). The aim of the treatment is to suppress the process of inflammation, restore mobility and treat any possible organ manifestations.
In the case of inflammatory rheumatic diseases, early diagnosis and treatment in accordance with the guidelines are important for restoring mobility and avoiding irreversible organ damage.
The department cooperates closely with the departments of radiology, urology, vascular surgery, the Kuratorium für Dialyse und Nierentransplantation e.V. (KfH) on the hospital premises, various specialist pratices in the region, and university transplant centers.
